Be Careful About Dishing Out Titles

Titles can seem very insignificant to many, but to many they can change their mindset. Giving the wrong titles to the wrong people can lead to horrific consequences within your organization. You need to be careful about dishing out titles!

Titles ≠ Leaders

Many times, we dish out titles hoping that people will rise to the occasion. The truth is, this is rarely the case. More often, people do not live up to a title and can be driven by their ego rather than wanting to serve.

Leaders serve, titles have egos. Take a look at the top leaders around and you will see they don’t collect cool titles, rather they build their influence and followers.

Overall this points to people being given titles when they simply don’t deserve/ can’t fill them. They’re being given the title too soon, before they are in the right mindset.

Take Time And Evaluate Properly

The best way to avoid people getting titles when they are unsuited or not ready for the role is to be patient. Instead of rushing or being over eager when promoting someone. Take the time to test them, give them chances, and train them when necessary.

Doing this will allow you the opportunity to evaluate potential candidates before they’re given a title. Do they have the leadership capabilities needed? Are they looking to serve? These tests should answer the questions. In turn, this will allow you to match the right people to the right titles.

Create A Culture

As always, everything starts from the top. If your leaders in a company are ego-driven, live in an ivory tower, and do not have a serving mindset, then the rest of your company will follow.

Build the right culture and mindset from the top down, as this will help your team to get into the right mindset around titles.

Titles do not create great leaders; in fact, they often create egos. But all is not lost, there are a few ways you can combat these egos and ensure the right people are given the right titles.
