Build a Strong Team
As leaders, we need to observe and learn from our everyday experiences. Whether you travelled somewhere new or simply met up with an old friend, observe and learn from these experiences and interactions, using them to make you a better leader.
For today’s article, I draw inspiration from a recent fishing trip I went on catching a big tuna!
As a leader, you cannot go at it alone, you need a competent team. I think back to a recent fishing trip, while we may all have been excited to work with an experienced captain, without his deckhand preparing the baits and rods, he would not have been able to provide such a great experience.
It is easy to focus on the person in the limelight, but behind that person is a competent team who helped to get them there. As a leader, you need a competent and experienced team who can support your efforts.
How do you find and grow a team like this?
The first step to attracting and growing a good team is to have a welcoming environment for new team members. When people feel welcomed, they feel relaxed. When we are relaxed, we do our best work.
Have a clear onboarding process for new employees where you make them feel welcomed and help them to understand your vision, purpose, and goals. This way they will feel a part of something bigger.
We also need to understand that roadblocks can often be a gift. As leaders and as employees you may be hiring, a roadblock could have been a catalyst for change. Ask and learn about their stories and what got them to where they are now. This will help you to better understand them and their goals, allowing you to align them with the goals of the organization.
We often try to go at things as fast as possible, however often great results take time. I was reminded of this on this trip, because while we spent all day on the water, we only got a tuna right at the end of the day.
Hire good people and be patient for results.
