Life is hard! As leaders, we often have to put our trust in others, groom them, grow them, and give them responsibility. Unfortunately, people are human and can let us down. Most of the time, it will be little things, but sometimes it can be big. People can let you down, steal from you, and cost your company millions.

How do you deal with this as a leader? How do you deal with someone you trusted letting you down?

How to Deal with Unexpected Situations That Cause Deep Damage?

The important part of any fall is how you get up. So how do you deal with and get up from these hard situations?

  1. Secure & understand the impact. Are you close to the bottom? Will you make it through? How do you maintain operations? These are the questions you need to ask to understand the situation and the impact it has had.
  2. What do you need to fix? Once you know the situation you can look at the fix. What needs to be done? Who can do it? And how long will it take? Put together an action plan and show strength when you’re expected to be weak.
  3. Take action against the perpetrators. Sometimes in life, you can’t show mercy. You need to stand up for what is right and take the appropriate action to ensure situations like this are not repeated.

The most important part is to deal with the situation. It is very easy to retreat and hide, but as a leader you need to lead through the mist to get back into the sun.

Go Back to Basics

When big problems arise, it is often best to relook at your foundation. Are there any basics that you need to be refreshed on?

NBA coach John Wooden is widely known for teaching his players how to put on their socks and shoes at the beginning of every season. While it may seem like a menial task, Coach Wooden understood that putting on your shoes correctly meant less blisters, less injury, and more game time. He started with the basics and is widely regarded as one of the best basketball coaches of all time.

Go back to your ground floor, relook at things, and ensure your basics are strong. As you’ll need a strong foundation to rebuild!
